BONIFACIO

In July 2013, Philippine Stagers Foundation (PSF), the theatre company that brought three BroadwayWorld.com (BWW) Philippines awards for their banner 2012 season production, will bring a new musical titled ‘Bonifacio: Isang Sarswela’. The said presentation is written and directed by Vincent M. Tañada and is in commemoration of the 150th birth anniversary of one of the brave heroes of Philippine history—Andres Bonifacio y de Castro (30 November 1863 – 10 May 1897).

After mounting ‘JOE: A Filipino Rock’sical’, Tañada chose to have Bonifacio to be the subject of his latest opus because he has always believed in courage and gallantry as important requisites for heroism. In fact, it is PSF’s most intense production ever to date.

“It is Bonifacio’s extreme love for country that made him sacrifice his life. Such love is the noblest kind of love; it is not personal, but selfless and munificent. How many of the youth of today have appreciated that love for country? How much of ourselves can we magnanimously offer for the good of our country and fellow Filipinos?” Tañada.

According to him, the main objective of the play is to inspire the audience in living a life of sacrifice.

Also, he mentioned and clarified that the play he is doing may not encourage an overwhelming act of heroism like offering one’s life, but it is a way to at least do something to make other people’s life better. It is helping the forgotten sectors of society; educating and inspiring the youth by means of the arts, visiting the prisoners, the aged, and the sick are good examples of modern Bonifacio deeds.

‘Bonifacio: Isang Sarswela’ is set to open its Press Preview night on Friday, July 19 at Tanghalang Pasigueño, 6pm with Vincent M. Tañada as Bonifacio. He will be ably supported by PSF’s home-grown artists like BWW Philippines awardee Cindy Liper as Gregoria de Jesus, Aliw awardee nominee Jordan Ladra alternates with Kevin Posadas as Emilio Aguinaldo, Monique Azerreda and Adelle Ibarrientos-Lim as Hilaria Aguinaldo with Patrick Adrian Libao as Emilio Jacinto.

Third prize winner PSF educates and entertains their audiences through their values-oriented productions. Through PSF’s Theater with a Purpose project, aspiring theater performers are able to get free extensive acting workshops that discover and constantly polish their talent. The group is behind the successful staging of the acclaimed youth-oriented play “Ako si Ninoy: A Filipino Musicale.” Next on their agenda is “Boni: Isang Sarswela,” a play for the 150th birth anniversary of Philippine hero Andres Bonifacio. “Our goal is to perform not only here in Luzon, but also in Visayas and Mindanao. That way, we can share the message of the play to more people, and hopefully inspire and spread love and blessings,” Villaviray added.

More than just a theater company, PSF also shapes the youth to be responsible and caring individuals through outreach programs for the sick, the less fortunate children, and the elderly.

“We’ll use our prize to share, share, share. As the years go by and our group grows, our mission to help more people continues to increase,” shared Villaviray.

“Everything we get from our performances, shows, and competitions is donated to our beneficiaries,” said PSF member Nicki Villaviray. “Right now, we have free summer workshops for those who can’t afford to pay the tuition fee. As servants of the arts, we also want to help our fellow youth and allow them to get the training they need.”

Just like these exemplary groups, today’s young Filipinos can embody the ideals of a true Yumbassador by making the best choices in life, harnessing one’s talents for the benefit of others.
